Position Specific Summary

The Academic Training Team Graduate Student Assistant (ATT GSA) in the Department of Prevention and Community Health (PCH) is a part-time student position for current students in a PCH MPH or doctoral program.

Academic degree programs in PCH include a PhD Program in Social and Behavioral Sciences and four MPH programs in Community-Oriented Primary Care, Health Promotion, Maternal and Child Health, and Public Health Communication and Marketing.

The Academic Training team serves students through their programs and supports their academic, research, and practice training. The team maintains centralized communications about academic training activities in the Department and manages a weekly newsletter (The PCH Connection) for all PCH students and faculty. Through these resources and others, the team responds to inquiries, disseminates information, and supports the organization and analysis of data to conduct quality improvement of students' academic progressions. The team additionally supports orientations, special events for students, and research activities for faculty and staff, as needed.

The team comprises the PCH Vice Chair, the Academic Training Program Manager, the Practice Manager, and the Academic Training Team Graduate Student Assistant in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.

    RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Assist with advising BS/MPH students in the department during their transition period.
  • Assist with the development of databases and metrics to monitor academic training progress across programs.
  • Support the coordination of Culminating Experiences (CE) presentations.
  • Assist the Academic Training Program Manager by providing faculty and students with appropriate forms.
  • Assist the Vice Chair by supporting PCH Practice Committee activities.
  • Support the dissemination of relevant academic information.
  • Support the organization and analysis of data relevant to academic training (e.g., students' intake survey).
  • Support the coordination of departmental events and trainings, such as orientation, information sessions, PCHats, guest speakers, social gatherings, and engagement activities.
  • Support the preparation and distribution of the weekly newsletter.
  • Schedule rooms (in-person or virtual) for meetings and student events coordinated by the Department.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs other light administrative/office duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties related to the position.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Qualified candidates will hold a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization. In addition, candidates must be a current student in a PCH MPH or doctoral program.
  • Strict adherence to GW's data and information privacy protocols
  • Excellent communication (writing and verbal), interpersonal, organizational, and administrative skills
  • Comprehensive computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications
  • Proficiency in Zoom, Doodle, Canva, and Mailchimp
  • Prior experience or willingness to learn branding strategies
  • Intermediate, independent research skills to remain current on public health news, research, and student opportunities

Standard Position Description

The student will coach individuals needing individual and/or academic support. Tasks may include: with a high level of autonomy identify, intervene, and coach individuals to succeed in their goals, conduct focus groups and/or interviews, work collaboratively with data management platforms and professional staff to obtain and compile applicable information, identify and connect individuals with supportive resources. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental needs.
