Job description: This position, in partnership with faculty subject-matter experts (SMEs), and support staff, designs, develops, creates, deploys, and reviews media content intended for online and programs using multimodal course design. The role also supports faculty with media production, graphic design, video/audio recording, and video/audio editing services. As a member of the Center for Digital Learning, the position will implement and promote the effective use of course media, learning technologies, universal design, and instructional strategies that reflect Pepperdine University's commitment to academic excellence.Duties
- INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA DESIGN: Collaborates with and guides faculty, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and academic support staff in the planning, designing, and implementing all aspects of course and program media design (instructional content, digital learning activities, etc.). Meets faculty and staff where they are, in skill-level, delivery modality, campus location, and communication preferences. Works with faculty and SMEs to plan, design, create, and edit media for courses, programs, and learning paths based on adult learning principles to promote critical thinking and learner engagement in multiple modalities. Produces all content with an "accessibility and mobile first" mindset to meet universal design best practices and reduce barriers to student learning. Implements and ensures the University-wide instructional design and course/program deployment standards for programs, class sites, content, and instructional technologies. Conducts a thorough quality assurance review of course content before delivery and implementation. May recommend changes to the review schedule to ensure the high-quality delivery of course media content over time, keeping learning design, accessibility, usability, and course/standards consistency in mind. Contributes to content creation and dissemination efforts to empower colleagues and professors to create or to teach effectively with technology, including documentation, learning aids, graphics, and other materials for online, print, and other deliverables/platforms. Works with Instructional Designers and course design teams within the Center and at each school to assess and implement University-wide standards and best practices on instructional media design and media content deployment. Works with schools, faculty, and support personnel to develop the appropriate media options for asynchronous online learning content, resources, and other content for (a) online faculty success and (b) online student success. Secures and maintains audio, video, and other University-provided equipment.
- PROJECT OVERSIGHT: Works on multiple concurrent projects from initiation to completion, including consultations, development, implementation, evaluation, revision, etc. Contributes to the project planning with team members, program leads, faculty, support staff, service providers, and other constituents. Estimates time and resources required for tasks and projects. Monitors and updates projects on project management tools to track the completion of tasks, milestones, and deliverables. Routinely communicates project status through reports or meetings with supervisor, team, stakeholders (internal and external), and leadership. Partners with key stakeholders to gather feedback on future projects, upgrades, and/or changes. May lead small to medium special projects periodically.
- COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION: Represents Pepperdine and the Center for Digital Learning in a professional manner when collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. Adopts, supports, and contributes to a welcoming, inclusive, collaborative, professional, and productive team and work environment. Develops and maintains strong partnerships with campus personnel and departments, as well as with external vendors and service providers, to ensure current and future operational success. Conducts outreach to university faculty and subject matter experts (SMEs) using all communication and delivery methods to determine needs and build and maintain strong relationships. Partner and collaborate with school faculty, SMEs, and academic support to design, implement, and review course learning content, including course goals, learning objectives, asynchronous interactive content, course outlines, and multimedia deployment.
- FACULTY SUPPORT: Rapidly troubleshoots deployed media in class sites, programs, or other content in the support of faculty and learner success. Partners with school support staff and instructional designers to remediate elements of existing course media content as needed. Shares and promotes effective media practices, emerging techniques, and other lessons from active research in the field of instructional design, educational media, digital learning environments, pedagogy, and other relevant topics. Contributes to the Center's web presence.
- RESEARCH, ANALYSIS, AND DEVELOPMENT: Analyzes course designs, media strategies, selected technologies, assessments, content evaluations, accessibility reports, and other data and feedback to recommend quality improvements for teaching and learning. Reviews periodicals, journals, websites, and other sources of information to keep abreast of new developments in the fields of educational media, instructional design, universal design/accessibility, digital learning environments, pedagogy, and/or other relevant topics. Participates in local and/or national instructional design, media design, or learning technology communities of practice.

- Bachelor's degree in media production, advertising, graphic design, marketing, communication, education (learning technologies, educational technology, teacher education, or instructional design), or other related field; courses in technology, education, graphic or information design.
- Minimum 2 years of media design/production or equivalent work experience.
- Experience designing, building, and/or deploying media, content, and resources.
- Experience managing and delivering small projects.
- Familiar with content review and quality, assurance methods and strategies.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven organizational skills.
- Demonstrates working knowledge of hardware and software products and problem-solving/troubleshooting skills.
- Familiar with accessibility standards and techniques for content creation for learners with physical or learning challenges.
- Demonstrated media capture skills (e.g., TechSmith Camtasia/SnagIt, Adobe Captivate, etc.).
- Graphic design and multimedia skills (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.).
- Experience using communication and collaboration tools (e.g., web conferencing, online collaboration, chat, etc.).
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to conduct a needs assessment.
- Ability to maintain complete and accurate records.
- Ability to adapt to the changing landscape of media development, instructional design, learning technologies, and curricular design models and tools.
- Ability to identify and troubleshoot basic learning technology issues.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with people at a variety of levels.
- Ability to work in a team and establish collegial relationships with faculty, staff, and peers.
- General knowledge of working with computers and applications in a networked environment; knowledge working with productivity software (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Workspace); file conversion; HTML and/or HTML editors; graphic and media preparation for various delivery (web, presentation, online meetings, etc.). Web Conferencing. Video/audio recording and editing. Screen and audio capture. Google Workspace (Docs/Drive). Basic to intermediate spreadsheets (Google Sheets, Excel). Basic productivity or Microsoft Office (Word/PowerPoint).
- Master's degree in media production, advertising, graphic design, marketing, communication, education learning technologies, educational technology, teacher education, or instructional design), or other related field; courses in technology, education, graphic or information design.
- Preference toward individuals with experience working with higher education institutions.
- Experience using AI tools for instructional design and media creation.
- Experience with learning technologies (LMS, plagiarism detection, etc.).
- Creating interactive content, such as H5P, Panopto Video Quiz, and other tools or services. LTI tool usage and integration.
- Knowledge of pedagogical theory, tips and techniques using technology, and learning management systems.
- Familiar with instructional design/development theories, techniques, and processes (e.g. ADDIE).
- Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and make recommendations for improvements.
