This includes preparing students to enter the associate degree programs in Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Mortuary Science, Natural Sciences, and to navigate the students as they matriculate in their respective programs at the University of the District of Columbia Community College (UDC-CC). The Student Navigator provides student support services to help students persist from matriculation to graduation and coordinates their transition to undergraduate programs. The incumbents will establish and maintain partnerships with students and service providers for educational, career, and related program and service needs.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesStudent Support:
- Establishes positive and trusting relationships with students by implementing a case management approach to advising. Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with the Office of Academic Affairs, Student Success, faculty and staff to facilitate advisement, academic progress review, and implement innovative retention programs and services for new, at-risk and enrolled students.
- Provides academic and career planning to students taking pre- requisite courses required to formally start the Allied Health associate degree programs and to continue tracking the students as they matriculate towards degree completion.
- Interviews students to gather information to assess service needs; plans and implement special projects and coordinates a variety of department activities and services to better serve and extend existing services to students in the various Allied Health programs at the College. Case management may be inclusive of one-on-one interaction, phone, and/or online advising.
- Coordinates and provides program introduction meetings, workshops and/or seminars which include developing associated material to promote and inform as they relate to Allied Health student populations. Coordinates and/or provides supportive services to support academic persistence and success which include developing associated material to promote and inform as they related to Allied Health student populations.
- Adheres to strict student confidentiality guidelines as established under the
- Works closely with faculty and program coordinators to ensure each student’s successful retention and completion of their degree program.
- Works closely with faculty to identify students who are at-risk of failure and employ intentional and aggressive intervention strategies such as intrusive advising, tutoring, and coaching that help students overcome barriers to matriculation.
- Maintains spreadsheets for students tracking attendance verification, midterm grades, final grades, progression GPA and developing action plans.
- Participates in recruitment activities, registration, drop/add/withdrawal functions, and coordinates new student orientations and/or orientations as they relate to Allied Health’s purpose and services.
- Maintains a system for tracking students along career and education pathway.
- Maintains a tracking system for student attendance, behavior/performance and academic progress.
- Acts as liaison with external partners and multiple stakeholders (e.g. provides program information packets; off-site activities, attends information sessions, etc.).
- Gathers and analyzes data and prepares reports related to the assigned student population caseload.
- Facilitates the transition of students from non-credit health courses to credit courses, connecting them with student services, academic and support programs.
- Coordinates services such as child care and transportation that will support student matriculation.
- Attends academic advising trainings, department and division meetings.
- Communicates regularly with key staff at community partner organizations and works collaboratively to develop and strengthen student support network, referrals and recruitment pipeline.
- Develops opportunities for students to gain real-world information and exposure to targeted career pathway.
- Coordinates services with relevant college departments and community agencies.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in Education, Counseling or a related field (Doctorate degree preferred).
- At least four years of experience in student development or academic advisement.
- At least one year working in the coordination of Allied Health Program services.
